We are pleased to announce plans for new programming for the Mark Twain Circle Membership.
1) Week of NOV 11, 2024: panel featuring speaker(s) from Elmira Center for Mark Twain Studies fall symposium on Gilded Age Humor; recordings of the talks will be available on the Ctr’s website for listening beforehand; the panel’s conversation will be structured by questions and comments from the zoom audience.
2) Second half of JAN, 2025: follow-on from MLA panel: Darryl Dickson-Carr speaking on Percival Everett’s novel James; Matt Seybold as moderator; to be advertised as part of the “Trouble Begins at Eight” series from the Ctr for Mark Twain Studies. Professor Dickson-Carr’s paper will be available for reading beforehand; the panel’s conversation will be structured by questions and comments from the zoom audience.
3) February, 2025: panel with emerging scholars. This event will probably mimic live panels, with the panelists reading short papers, followed by Q&A from the zoom audience.
4) March or April, 2025: second “Trouble Begins” panel on topic to be determined.
The Mark Twain Circle and the Elmira Center for Mark Twain Studies have agreed to a collaboration which envisions the Circle sponsoring two “Trouble Begins at Eight” panels each year, one spring and one fall. Elmira will record the panels as it does all of the events in the series, and post them on their website. The Executive Committee plans to upgrade the Circle’s website to be able to post the recordings there also.
In addition, Laura Trombley and Seema Sharma are in discussions about a Mark Twain conference at Seema’s institution, Jai Hind College, University of Mumbai, India, with Laura as MTC liaison. Spring 2026 is target date. Topic to be decided.
Finally, the programming committee is interested in hearing from you on two issues:
1) Do you have a preference for which days of the week to hold the zoom meetings?
2) Do you have suggestions for topics for the second Trouble Begins at Eight panel?
You may send us feedback using our General Query form or by emailing marktwaincircleofamerica@gmail.com directly.
