ABOUT THE CIRCLE

The Mark Twain Circle of America is the principal scholarly organization dedicated to the study of Samuel Clemens, his works, and his times. The membership includes most of the leading Mark Twain scholars in the world, as well as teachers, fans, and enthusiasts from many nations and many walks of life.

The Mark Twain Circle is an active presence in the American Literature AssociationModern Language Association of America, and South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA). We also cooperate regularly and cordially with the American Humor Studies AssociationThe Mark Twain Papers and Project at the University of California at Berkeley, The Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies, The Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut, and The Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, Missouri.

The Circle sponsors scholarly meetings at American Literature Association and Modern Language Association of America national conventions; we also participate in special events about Mark Twain’s life and work.

THE LOUIS J. BUDD FUND

The Louis Budd Travel Grant, in recognition of  the generosity and mentorship of the late Lou Budd, makes travel funds available to graduate students and emerging scholars selected to present on a MTC-sponsored panel at ALA or MLA. Candidates must apply in writing explaining their need and the importance of the grant to their progress in Mark Twain studies.  Availability of funding varies.

THE HADLEYBURG FUND

The Hadleyburg Fund directs donations to the Mark Twain House in Hartford, CT, with particular emphasis on supporting educational programming.
